SAMPLING

SAMPLING IN TYPOGRAPHY AND MUSIC

This was my second project which I chose to do in my final year at university. the topic of this project was around sampling and how it is different to plagiarism. I based this topic around both music and typography. I decided to base the sampling of typography around Garamond. Garamond is a typeface which has been replicated throughout the centuries. Over this time Designers have developed a number of variations of the typeface to avoid copyright infringement.

Sampling in music is where an artist will reuse a portion (or sample) of a sound recording from another recording. Sampling compromises rhythm, melody, speech, sounds or entire bars of music. The artist will speed up, slow down, repatch or loop the sample to make a new piece of music. I based my artwork on the song ‘LA Di Da Di’ by Slick Rick. Snoop Dogg Sampled this song heavily with the song ‘Lodi Dodi.’ Snoop Dogg took the basis of the story told in the original song and changed the majority of the words to create his own song. This is commonly done to pay homage to musicians when paved the way for up coming artists.

To tie together these two subjects over the common ground of sampling I used the quote ‘‘Imitation is the sincerest formof flattery’’ by Oscar Wilde as including The Intellectual Property Office and logo.

This project aims to educate people on the close similarities between plagiarism and sampling. As well as the reason for why certain typography and music exist.
