*OUT OF SORTS
DID YOU KNOW WE ARE 10 LETTERS OUT OF SORT?
During my last year at university we were asked to select a range of topics to base our final projects. One of the subjects I chose was extinction. originally I chose the extinction of animals but I quickly ran into a wall of how to visually communicate the disappearance of them. that is when I discovered there was 10 letter which disappeared from out alphabet.
Once I finishing conducting my research I had to re create these forgotten characters as some of them did not exist in the Baskerville typeface. To visually communicate the disappearance of these letter I made a poster with the extinct letter cut out, accompanied with an animation and tickets with a description of the letter and how it disappeared if the information was available.
This exhibition would be held at the Bodleian Library. I designed tickets which included a brief description on the name of the extinct letter, how it was used, who had made the letter and the reason why it had become extinct.
*Out of sorts is an old metal type term that indicates some characters are missing.
The English alphabet once consisted of 36 letters and characters. As language and pronunciation evolved, some of these became obsolete. This exhibition showcases the original letters and characters alongside indicating their function as they disappeared from the alphabet.
